Our Story
Towngate Developments Ltd was started in 1988 by Ray Thompson with his wife Julia. Initially, the company imported facing bricks and other materials from Europe selling to both the housing and commercial sectors.
Notable projects that the company was involved with include the refurbishment of the old Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge, The
McDonald Institute building in Cambridge and, with others the refurbishment of Hill Hall in Epping, working with English Heritage.
Ray Thompson’s connection with the construction industry began over 50 years ago when he started in his father’s builders’ merchant’s business and this continued over many years of sourcing and supplying materials to the industry. Add to this Ray’s interest in architecture and design and it goes some way to explaining his passion for building.
In 1995 the company diversified into house building with an emphasis on building thoughtfully designed houses in select locations. In 2008 Ray’s son Dan joined the Company and he has grown the business considerably, now concentrating solely on house building. Dan continues the same mission to create beautiful homes in great locations, developing a reputation for build quality, careful sourcing of materials and attention to detail.
It is now 15 months since we first moved in and from day one Ray and Dan Thompson have looked after our every need and made sure that we are completely happy with our new home."
Everyone who comes into the house loves it. We have loved living in it. You did a really fantastic job!"
